James “Jimmy” Miller, 1935–2026

It is with great sadness that we announce
the peaceful passing of Jimmy Miller, on March 11, 2026,
at the age of 90.

Predeceased by his loving wife Brigid (née Drody) and by his son Richard, he will be forever missed and lovingly remembered by his daughters Pearl (Denis) and Maureen, by his grandchildren Jamie (François), Emma (Calvin), Joe (Méliane), Nolan (Brianna) and Brigid, and by his sister Bobbi, along with many other relatives and friends.

Jimmy was born on December 19, 1935, in Wakeham (Gaspé), QC to Richard and Lulu (née Lawrence) Miller. He and his younger sister Bobbi grew up surrounded by many special Boyle, Miller, and Patterson cousins, many who would remain close friends throughout Jimmy’s life.

He and Brigid married in Douglastown (Gaspé) in 1960 and moved their young family to Howick, QC in 1967. Like many of their Gaspesian relatives and friends, they always kept their “down home” ties, but made their home in Howick, where they made many close friends on Fertile Creek, at the Howick Curling Club, and at the Lanterne, a local bar which Jimmy and Brigid owned from 1982 until 1997. As Brigid’s “roadie”, they both enjoyed lots of time at musical events and gatherings in the Châteauguay Valley, in Gaspé and at Pembrooke Fiddle Contests.

Jimmy would have several careers throughout his life; from an underground miner in Murdochville, scheduler for Dominion Bridge, shop manager at Howick’s Brospec, owner of Aqua Val, selling and installing in-ground swimming pools, theatre rigging design at GC Stage Equipment, and bar owner of La Lanterne.

He was very involved in community service; he was active in the Howick Legion and served as president for some years, he was one of the founding members of SABEC. He was also one of the founding members of the Howick Christmas Basket group, he served as president while also being an active volunteer for the École Modèle (Pink School) community committee in Howick for many years.

Jimmy connected with and touched the lives of many people. He was genuinely interested in everyone he met and was generous with his time. He was intelligent and well-read, and he could talk to most anyone about most anything. He had a wonderful sense of humour; he loved to tell jokes and repeat his funny stories, all the while laughing with his very distinct and infectious “Jimmy laugh.” He was extremely kind and very loved, and he will be deeply missed.

Our family would like to extend their most heartfelt thanks to the kind staff of Residence Chez Karen in Huntingdon, who went above and beyond in their care of Jimmy during his final years.

In celebration of Jimmy’s life, visitation will be held at the Saint-Malachie Catholic Church located on Roy St. in Ormstown, QC, at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday May 2nd, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served following the funeral, at the Ormstown Legion, 33 Prince-Albert St. in Ormstown.  A cemetery burial will take place in Douglastown (Gaspé) Québec, at a later date.

My deepest condolences Pearl, Maureen and respective families. I’m saddened by the passing of Jimmy after reflection that there were a few tImes I thought of getting into The Lanterne when younger, but not that I could recall making it. (I wanted to!)
He was truly a Man of his community on top of all that as per above: a Great Community-Spirit ‘Generator’!
    Again, my deepest condolences.

Jimmy was not only my boss for many years at The Lantern he was also a very close friend; him and his family were like a second family to me. I learned alot from him and we shared a vision of life which was pretty similar.
Jimmy, keep walking on this path of peace you were already on in this life now you have your beautiful Brigid and wonderful son Richard to accompany you on this new Journey! Farewell my dear friend!❤️

I am so blessed and grateful to have known Jimmy. What a sweet, wonderful man! He was like a second father to me. He loved to connect with people to brighten their day and sometimes make them laugh (though no one laughed harder at his jokes than he did). I will miss him!

It is with great sadness we say good-bye to Jimmy. His smile, his kind way, his ties to family and the love he and Dad always showed each other have left us with wonderful memories. May they be smiling, telling stories and reminiscing, as we remember them.
