On Monday, September 8, 2025, Gerald “Gerry” Cavanagh passed peacefully
from this world, with family by his side, following a short stay at the Ormstown
Barrie Memorial Hospital being treated for pneumonia.
…
Gerry was born on the Cavanagh homestead in the old log home on the Chateauguay River, on St. Patrick’s Day, 1940 to John and Gladys (née Foran) Cavanagh. He had a happy childhood with his family members: Michael, deceased husband of Esther; Rita (deceased); Hilda (deceased wife of Edgar Robidoux); Madeline (deceased); Francis (Anita Greig); and Dave (Lynda). He outlived his wife, Jean Charters, who passed away in 2011.
Gerry led a very active life from an early age. He attended high school in Ormstown and was involved in all their sports programs, representing the school in many inter-school tournaments. He also enjoyed his time in the school’s theatre program.

After graduating from high school, he worked for Bell Canada for a few years before joining the US Army in 1961. During his term of duty, he was in Anchorage, Alaska during the 9.2 earthquake on Good Friday, 1964. Upon returning to Ormstown, he worked at Crest Hardware with Bill and Madeline Greig before joining the Green Giant Company in Sainte-Martine where he worked for more than 20 years. He ended his working career as a self-employed electrical contractor happily serving his local clientele.
Gerry’s true mission in life was his active participation and leadership within Alcoholics Anonymous in the Chateauguay Valley. He overcame his addiction and spent more than 50 years helping other addicts overcome theirs. He was well known for his ability to listen and gently advise without preaching.

Gerry is also survived by his longtime partner Anne Marie Morell and her family: Pierre (Louise); Isabelle, and Philip (Melissa), and leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at McGerrigle Funeral Home, on Friday, September 19 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A celebration of Gerry’s life will take place the following day, on Saturday the 20th of September, starting at 3:30 p.m. at the Village Church of the Nazarene, 52 Lambton St., in Ormstown. A reception will follow; come and join the family and Gerry’s many friends to celebrate a “Life well lived”.
In his memory a donation can be made to the Barrie Memorial Hospital Foundation or to an organization which helps the less fortunate.
Gerry’s 1957 school yearbook comment says it all:
“Don’t take life too seriously—you’ll never get out alive!”

Our thoughts are with Gerry’s Family and His Many Friends.
Gerry was part of our big Family growing up.
He was a close friend of our brother Rod and was at our kitchen
table many Sunday mornings for breakfast.
Gerry always sent a beautifully written and heartfelt card whenever we lost
a Family member. Whenever we met he would ask about everyone.
Ormstown will not be the same without him. He was a « gift ».

Gerry, it was so great chatting recently like old times
Ormstown will never be the same without you.
Some people seem destined to live eternally……you were one of that rare group. You touched so many lives with your sense of humour, quiet listening, and kindness.
I can only imagine the warm welcome you received joining all your Family and loved ones. The Heavens just gained a bright new shining star…….a life well lived while here on Earth.
Lambton St will sense a huge void with your passing.
RIP, my friend,
Sincerely , Sharon Higgins
