I have been out of the community for some months but was saddened today to read of Bert’s passing. He was such a happy, jolly character, so full of enthusiasm and will be sorely missed. He and his motorbike and sidecar were a permanent fixture. Condolences to all the family.

Sometimes life just isn’t fair. The good ones go too soon and Bert, you were a good one. You made me feel so at home with you and Lida. Welcoming me as if I was one of your own. We shared so many laughs, good meals, drinks, and we made such good memories. I was really looking forward to seeing you in August when Erik came to town but I guess you were needed someplace else. I know, wherever you are, you are making the most of it. You will Rest In Peace Bert, I know you will. And you’ll live on in our hearts forever. Thank you for your kindness, acceptance, openness and for laughing at my jokes. You had the best Dad jokes haha, or should I say the worst?! You laughed and laughed at them. Oh I remember that so fondly. Until we meet again my friend!!! xo

Beste Lida, Laura, Wendy en Erik,

My condolences on the passing of Uncle Bert. He was a sweet, jovial and creative uncle about whom many nice stories can be told: his white motorcycle, of which he once left the sidecar with Lida in it at a traffic light; he lived in houses declared uninhabitable in Amersfoort; it was nice to visit Bert and Lida (there was always something happening or something to discover). As a young nephew, I also thought it was cool that he resembled my heroes from Astrix and Obelix. Later, when I heard that he and Lida visited the Netherlands, I tried to meet them. For me they brought peace and confidence and they were really interested in you.

    Hartelijke groet,

    Lidewij, Sietske en Hora

As a kid I thought Bert was a very open and honest man, as I got old I understood his teasing was all in good fun.
I don’t think I was able to be close with him as much as I would have liked but it’s what happens when you’re a young kid in grades 5 and 6.
I, alike others here, never expected him to leave so soon. I never even knew he was as old as he was, I thought he was in his 50s or 60s at most.

Even with my limited time spent with Bert, I do feel the loss of his passing and I cannot assume the weight of his absence on others who knew them better and longer.

-My deepest sympathies and most humbling wishes for peace on all you.

Bert was a lion of a man and most able at anything he put his mind to. Our Dutch connection led to being best of friends and we will miss his place at our table. Voor altijd in ons hart.

Dear Lara,Wendy,Erik and families. Please accept our most deepest condolence’s on the passing of your Father and Grandfather. We met Bert and Lida not too long after they arrived from Holland when Lida was instrumental in settling up a play group for our young children, along with others from the local area.Over the years we became close friends and participated in many mutual interests.Bert loved his family, his time on the farm and his involvement in volunteering for community projects.Always someone to be counted on.The caring, love and compassion he expressed towards Lida as exemplary and extremely touching. We will forever in our mind remember the last time we saw Bert….he had left us on his motorbike,as he called it,and was driving on the 202 with a big smile on his face and Yuko in the sidecar……
    Will be missed….R.I.P

It still does not seem real. I met Bert at the residence, he was so enthused because he learned I am of Dutch descent and could communicate by singing childhood songs to Lida. He shared stories of his past meeting Lida, his kids and grandchildren. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends. May his memory be a blessing.

To Laura, Wendy and Erik and your families.
We were so saddened to hear about Bert s sudden passing. Since Covid we had not seen him as often here, so missing our Yuko visits, trailer and camping and trip talks. We were able to catch up while on walks or as he got home from visiting Lida but that was never long enough it seems. He will be missed by so many here, as Bert and Lida were such an integral part of our community. May you cherish your good memories to help you in the months to come.

Without any farming experience Bert and Lida took their family to Canada, they worked very hard and with help of their relatives Herman Zijp and France and Jean Pierre Maice made it a succes. They enjoyed life. So sad he has to leave his beloved wife so suddenly. We will miss him! Jan and Magda Zijp, Olst, Netherlands.

To Bert’s loving family, grief is such a hard burden to bear but be assured that you are in the hearts of a large community of friends and such burdens shared are lightened. Bert was such a big part of our lives and he will be sorely missed. He had such a huge heart that the space he leaves is so empty.
All our love to you all.
