Jacqueline Ruth Sundborg (née-Yates), 1951–2022

Ruth Sunborg

It is with great sadness that we announce
the sudden passing of Ruth, aged 71.

Predeceased and eldest child of Calvin Yates and Mary Yates (Peters) of King’s Point, Newfoundland. She leaves to mourn her siblings Scott (Chris), Liz (Dave), Linda (David), numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and friends in Newfoundland. Beloved niece of Jean Yates (Dave Rankin), she leaves behind her cousins Ashley, Matthew, Jill and Erin of Godmanchester, Qc.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Fred Sundborg, and her children Kevin (Amanda), Nicholas (Meghan), Sheila and Eric. She was a loving Nanny to Lincoln, Saydie, Eva and Theo.

Ruth was a graduate of Memorial University and held various teaching positions in Newfoundland. When she visited her Aunt Jean in 1977, she met Fred Sundborg; Ruth and Fred worked side by side farming and raising a family. In the following years, Ruth was instrumental in the success of Suntor Holsteins. She was most proud of her family and their accomplishments.

Ruth was involved in many organizations and selflessly volunteered her time going above and beyond to support those around her; the Dewittville Women’s Institute, the Women’s Auxiliary of the Barrie Memorial Hospital, the United Church Women, Meals on Wheels, Ormstown 4-H, UPA, Chateauguay Valley Book Club and Betty Riel Foundation, to name a few of her involvements. She will be dearly missed.

Ruth was full of life and loved music, traveling, gardening, cooking and baking, she enjoyed hosting family and friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 4, 2022,
at 1 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Church, 19 Lambton St., Ormstown, Qc,
followed by the funeral service at 2:30 p.m. and a Celebration of Life and refreshments,
at the Ormstown Curling Club, 7 Châteauguay Street.

To honour her memory,
donations and memorial contributions
may be made to The Betty Riel Foundation

Cher Fred et à toute la famille,
I have just arrived from abroad, to learn this disheartening sad news. I had seen and spoken to Ruth a few days before I left, at the Ormstown Fair Building for the Farmers’ conference taking place there and, as always, Ruth was smilingly speaking to all and as energetic and empathic as she alone could be. She looked as if she should and could be around forever and for everyone’s good. Unfortunately, destiny seemed to have other plans. One thing is however certain, her legacy and involvement in so many community causes assures that her memory will survive and be treasured. Also, through her children and grand-children she will continue to live on. May the passing of time, alleviate your pain. Avec toute ma sympathie, Linda Julien.

My cousin Ruth had a knack for doing simple things which were of enormous importance. She showed me the 1-4-3-5 formula which demystified chord structure from guitar to piano for me. She accompanied me to the Avalon Mall cinema for a showing of Lenny when I was underage. She tossed me the keys to her 75 Plymouth Duster in Bonavista and suggested I take it for a spin when I was 19 (on unfamiliar roads in the dark). Years later she invited me to visit her and Fred’s dairy farm in Dewitville which I did on a motorcycle. Years later, I sent my eldest teenage daughter and her friend to that same farm for 2 weeks one summer for the « cow » perspective.

The last time we spent time together was to walk the King’s Point loop and chat about life and people and things in it. In all our shared times, she was unerringly positive and knew how to listen. Her way was to enrich. A formidably talented person with a heart of gold who was always interested in what was going on in my life. My cousin. One of a pack of 4 who are all superb people, each in their own design. I miss her and am deeply saddened at her loss, though I smile at the memories which come when her name is mentioned.

She was a special lady, and is indeed a loss to her community, as well as her family. We are truly saddened by her passing, and extend our deepest condolences to her family.

Fred, Kevin, Nicholas, Sheila, Eric and family.

Ruth’s sudden passing came as a surprise and shock to us all. As cousins were connected by the many fond memories of growing up. As time passed we all seemed to move in different directions and not see each other often. However, it only took a few minutes when we did get together before the stories and laughter would start. A favourite greeting was, “Remember when…” and another tale was told. Ruth liked people and she genuinely enjoyed the camaraderie of all she met. She was vibrant, optimistic and had a genuine friendly manner.

Ruth’s love and dedication to her family and an unselfish contributor to her community will be forever remembered. At this time of deep sorrow draw strength from each other, treasure your memories and hold Ruth’s energy and spirit in your hearts. I know that the love Ruth had for you all will be felt for a very long time and will continue to bring a smile that will warm and comfort you.

I will always remember my dear sweet cousin, with her beautiful smile, warmly and with love.

    Michelle

I’m shocked and upset to hear that we’ve lost Ruth, beloved wife of my dear second cousin Fred.

Ruth found me in 2015 via Ancestry.ca. She joked that she thought she’d try Internet dating, and she got me. I’m so glad she did! We spent many happy hours together, visiting and working on our genealogy–and had, in fact, hoped to go to Oldbury (part of Birmingham) in England together to dig up more inforation about Fred’s and my great-grandparents. So sad that we’ll now never be able to do that.

All my love to Fred and his children. Pat and I loved every minute we spent with you and Ruth in Ottawa during the Sesquicentennial celebrations. We’ll see you next week in Ormstown.

    Love Anne xoxo
