Joan Fraser Burton, April 28, 1953 – October 30, 2022

Peacefully at home in Ormstown, Quebec,
with her family by her side, on October 30th
Joan passed away at the age of 69.

Joan was the beloved wife of 47 years, the friend and supervisor of Robert Burton, the loving mother and mentor of Samantha (Grant Lovelace) of Pasadena, California, and of Nicholas (Yvette Ruiz) of Grimsby, Ontario. She was the only child of John Gordon Fraser and Marjorie Jean Ross, and a proud daughter of Dundee, Qc.

Joan was an active curler, avid gardener and enthusiastic walker who loved her long hikes in the Highlands of Scotland. A long-time employee of New Frontiers School Board, retiring in 2020, she took great pleasure in being involved in many aspects of the community, especially education.

Grateful thanks to the Colorectal Cancer Care Program of the Jewish General Hospital, to the wonderful personnel of the Cancer Care Clinic of St. Mary’s Hospital Centre, all the CLSC Huntingdon staff, and especially to all the Valley community who have gone above and beyond to provide support during her illness.

Visitation will take place Saturday, November 12, 2022, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
at the McGerrigle Funeral Home, 70 Lambton St., Ormstown.
A graveside celebration will be held the following day (November 13, 2022)
at 2:00 p.m, in the New Zion Cemetery, Smallman Road, Dundee.

In Joan’s memory, her family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations
may be made to the Zion United Church, 1831 Smallman, Dundee, Qc J0S 1L0
or to the St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation, Cancer Care Fund,
3830 Lacombe Avenue, Montreal, H3T 1M5.

Please remember Joan with grace and love,
a kind heart, and a forgiving soul.

I was so saddened to hear that Joan had passed. I worked with Joan for many years at the NFSB; always ready for a good walk to clear the mind and activate the body, always ready to discuss recent CBC radio stories, and incredibly, always ready to lend an ear. Joan was one of the good ones. My heart goes out to her family, whom she always spoke so proudly of. May Joan’s spirit live on in all those she touched.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Joan’s passing. We first met at Howick Elementary library. After many book-covering sessions, many shared lunches, and lots of discussion, Joan was the inspiration I needed to enroll at library school. I valued her instruction and commentary through those years. I am still in the library world, and think of her often. She was a good friend. She will be missed by her family and community.

Joan was my “Computer Guide” when it came into effect, when I was the Librarian at Franklin Elementary School, with a few others! Thinking I could not accomplish it, as Joan’s words were “ Yes you can, and I did”! I will Remember Joan’s “SMILE” in Her Lovely Photo, Her interest in a person to achieve and Her helpful ways of doing things with such a Pleasant Manner!

She will be Missed by us ALL in so many ways! May Her “MEMORIES” give you Strength, Comfort, and LOVE ❤️ In the Days Ahead!

I am devastated to hear the news of Joan’s passing. Joan was our very first library customer after we bought our bookstore in Knowlton. She was a loyal customer throughout her years as librarian at the schoolboard. I love her yearly visits and catching up with the goings on in Ormstown. Our bookstore would not be what it is without her belief in us and her loyalty right at the beginning. Please pass my condolences on to her family and friends.
