Helen Smith (née Greer), 1931–2023

Helen Smith, 91, passed away on February 4, 2023
at her retirement residence in Ottawa, Ontario
Born in Ormstown, Quebec to James Greer and Ann Cleland, she was the eldest of their three girls. Helen was predeceased by both of her sisters: Marion Merson and Margaret Stacey.

She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters: Karen (Ian) and Kathy (Jeff); grandchildren: Erin (Brandon) and Matthew (Caitlyn); as well as extended family members and life-long friends.

Living with Parkinson’s disease in her later years,
she remained an independent and social
individual who enjoyed all group
activities, especially bingo!

Helen will be honoured in a celebration of life on Saturday, February 11th at McGerrigle Funeral Home. Visitation begins at 11:30 a.m., with the remembrance ceremony at 1:00 p.m.  In spring a private interment service will be held at the Hemmingford Protestant Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made in Helen’s name to the Women’s Auxiliary of the Barrie Memorial Hospital, an organization she strongly supported. Helen believed that local health care makes a real difference to the people who live in the community.

Sorry to hear about your Mom- she was interesting and capable. Her fox neighbours were delightful to watch- especially in the springtime! My sincere condolences to all of her family.

Karen Kathy Erin Matthew and families, on behalf of Sam Tasha and myself I extend our sincerest condolences on the passing of your mom/grandma. These past few years were not very kind to Helen or to each of you with her declining health but the loyalty, dedication and personal sacrifices you collectively made to make Helen feel safe, comfortable and loved will leave you all with wonderful memories and the satisfaction that you did everything you possibly could to make your mom/grandma’s life the best life she could have.

So sorry to hear about Helen’s passing. I enjoyed my visits with your Mom when I worked at the CIBC in Ormstown. She was a very interesting lady and had strong opinions and beliefs. I liked that. My deepest sympathies to the family.
